Do you ever get the itch to just get out and travel? I do all the time! I just love being on the road, in a car driving all over the country. Jim (my husband) and I have driven across the country every year since 1999. I am also obsessed with cars. Yes really, cars. I have been told by several people that they never would have guessed but I think I was hooked from the beginning. My first car was a 1967 Mustang, I miss that car! It was totaled by someone looking at the accident on the other side of the freeway and not looking where he was going. So I was stopped and he was at full speed, my neck is still a little off center, I just like to think it helps me look at the world from a different angle.
It doesn’t help that Jim is totally obsessed with cars too, together we have owned 19 cars in our 14 year relationship! We have used several of them as props for our photo shoots as well. There is something about an old car that just works so well in a photo. It adds that edge, and just can make a photo more interesting. It’s one of the only props I love to use.
So I have a new idea for this year’s road trip, I want to photograph someone in every state we drive through! I want to photograph someone in their own environment, their hometown. I love creating images that are personal, soulful and truly show the person as who they are. I have done this already a few times but now I think I really want to make it more than just a project, it’s my new goal! If I had the time I would hit all 50 states but I think Jim would kill me! He is the voice of reason that reminds me we have a studio and a life here to take care of! I can’t help it if I want to be a gypsy!
We have to be in Michigan at the end of June, I am trying to figure out if we have time to drive as my schedule is already filling up into August. I’ll just make Jim watch Gumball Rally a few more times, add in some Top Gear here and there and he will want to try and break his record of 41 hours coast to coast! Of course it will take a little longer once he realizes we have to stop and take pictures along the way. 🙂
There is a scene in the movie “Elizabethtown” where Claire, Kirsten Dunst’s character tells Will that everyone must take at least one road trip in their life. I could not agree more! You must experience life in a car, driving through towns you otherwise would have never seen, stop off in Kansas to see the “Worlds largest prairie dog” or the “Mystery spot” in Arizona. It’s these little adventures that enrich our lives and I truly believe it is an experience everyone should try at least once!
Wish me luck! I want to drive across the country this summer, if not it will have to wait until fall when things (hopefully) slow down. Maybe I’ll have my ’66 Mustang finished by September! Now that would be fun to drive to New York!
Here are some shots from my last road trip!
