I remember being told to add a prop to my images. I thought to myself, am I missing something? Is there something wrong with the image? So I tried adding props, sometimes it worked and sometimes it just didn’t!
Adding props did make me think about my work more, should I add something here? Should I take away something there? Or do I just want to focus on my subject without any distraction? Props can make you explore your own thoughts, hats, cage veils, a cigarette…. (I know that smoking isn’t PC but it does change the mood!)
What is a prop? I think it is anything in the photograph which adds to the story behind the image. Other people in the image can be considered a prop, a table, books, or I have used a Polaroid camera and actual Polaroids as props. But the prop is not the photo! If it is too distracting it can take away from the impact you wish to create with your images. It’s kind of like picking out the right shoe to go with the right dress and then the right earrings. You want them all to stand out and to look great, but in the end, you want everyone to notice you, not what you were wearing!
